Insider Info from Carpenter Boot Company: Molding and breaking in

  • When heat molding is worth it (ELEMENT and GENESIS only). On our heat-moldable models, pain around the ankle bones is the classic reason to mold. Molding won't add length, so it can't fix a boot that's too short. Molding is optional and the skater's choice; if you decide to mold, have it done by a professional, and know that any heat molding voids the manufacturer warranty. (The ONYX is not heat-moldable.)
  • Give it about 10 sessions. New boots take roughly 10 sessions to break in. During that time, keep the top of the boot looser, especially the top laces and the Velcro, so your knees can come forward. Don't overtighten at the top early on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which CBC short track speed skating boot is right for me?

We make three short track boots. The ONYX is for growing kids, beginners and recreational skaters (low training impact). The ELEMENT is for developing skaters ready for more support (medium impact). The GENESIS, in Black or Mixed, is for competitive, high-volume training (high impact); many skaters choose it for the rigidity and support of its full carbon shell. Our Gear Guide and Boot Comparison page show them side by side.

Do CBC short track boots come in wide widths?

Yes. The ELEMENT and GENESIS come on our Standard or Wide last. The ONYX is built only on the CBC Wide last.

Can the ONYX be heat molded?

No. The ONYX is not heat-moldable (0%). It is built on the CBC Wide last to fit well out of the box. If you want a heat-moldable boot, the ELEMENT is 50% heat-moldable and the GENESIS has a heat-moldable carbon shell.

How do I size short track speed skating boots?

Measure both feet barefoot in millimeters (heel-to-toe length and widest point) and enter them in our boot sizer on the Fit page. Sizing is based on skating barefoot. If you wear anything thicker than a thin nylon sock, consider the larger size. If you fall between two sizes, always choose the larger size.

Do I need to heat mold my short track boots?

Most skaters don't. CBC boots usually fit straight out of the box. Heat molding is optional, for a specific fit issue, and it's the skater's choice. If you decide to mold, have it done by a professional; any heat molding voids the manufacturer warranty. On the ELEMENT and GENESIS, pain around the ankle bones is the main reason to mold. Molding won't add length. The ONYX is not heat-moldable.

How long does it take to break in short track boots?

About 10 sessions. During break-in, keep the top laces and Velcro looser so your knees can come forward; don't overtighten at the top.

Do the boots come with blades?

No, blades are sold separately. We carry EHS StayBent short track blades; they come pre-bent but not rockered, and we can rocker them for you.
