INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

Carpenter Boot Company • High Performance Speed Skating Equipment

This manual must be handed to the final user of our products.

Thank you for your purchase from Carpenter Boot Company (CBC), leaders in high performance long and short track speedskating boot technology and speedskating equipment.

IMPORTANT SAFETY WARNING

Short Track, Long Track, and Inline Skating are hazardous sports with inherent risks of injury which must be recognized and accepted. Even though we are sure your CBC product provides an unmatched level of performance, it will not protect you in all situations, even if appropriately used/worn. You alone are responsible for determining your ability and fitness to skate.

Always wear protective gear specific for speedskating (helmet, shin guards, cut-proof clothing and gloves). Always adhere strictly to the regulations on the skate track. Always proceed with caution and maintain full control of your speed and direction.

2. CBC BOOTS: RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USE AND MAINTENANCE

  • Always inspect your boots, blades, and other equipment before each use. In particular, check that your blades are securely mounted and that laces and straps are in good working order.
  • Before installing your blades, make sure the mountings on your boots are free from ice, snow, dirt or any other foreign element.
  • Stop skating and inspect your skates immediately if you hear clicking or other unusual sounds.
  • After use, dry the exterior and interior of the boots thoroughly, away from direct sources of heat.
  • Use only mild soap and water to clean the boots; avoid harsh cleaning agents or solvents.
  • Before storing your boots, make sure they are dry and put them in a dry place, away from direct sunlight.

Improper use and maintenance can dramatically reduce the performance of our products and will void our warranty.

3. HEAT MOLDING INSTRUCTIONS FOR CBC BOOTS

Heat molding of boots should be performed by an individual with molding experience. We do not accept returns on CBC products that have been molded.

Professionals who are vacuum molding boots must use a toe protection device, otherwise the toe box will become distorted.

  1. Position a towel in the front of a standard chair. Roll and situate a towel under the heel so the heel sits slightly higher than the toe.
  2. Unlace your CBC boots so that your feet can slide in unrestricted.
  3. Place boots in a traditional oven set to 70°C / 160°F for the time it takes the oven to reach temperature plus an additional 10 minutes. Test flexibility of the carbon shell. Do not use microwave, grill or other devices.
  4. Remove boots one at a time. Caution: boots will be hot. Use thin socks if necessary.
  5. Slide boots onto your feet, position heels on the rolled towel, lace up starting at the toe, and assume standard skating position (knees directly over toes).
  6. Massage out potential pressure points during the cooling process.
  7. Keep boots on until significant warmth has dissipated (partial cure within ~10 minutes).
  8. Fully unlace before removal to preserve the new shape.
  9. Allow full cure for 12 hours.
  10. If fit is not perfect, the process may be repeated (note: excessive molding will reduce stiffness).
  11. For spot modifications, a heat gun may be used by experienced individuals only.

4. HEAT MOLDING INSTRUCTIONS FOR CBC SHINARMOR

  1. ShinArmor is best molded on a hairless shin.
  2. Locate a flat pan or container that accepts the entire dimension of the ShinArmor cutout form.
  3. Heat tap water to just below boiling temperature.
  4. Fill the container with hot water.
  5. Submerge only one cutout form at a time.
  6. Allow ShinArmor to become soft and supple for 20–30 seconds.
  7. Use a spatula or tong to remove the cutout.
  8. Wait 10 seconds, then sit upright with toes on the edge of a table (heel hanging free).
  9. Lay the slightly cooled cutout on your unclothed shin.
  10. Gently massage the ShinArmor into place. Do not pull at the edges.
  11. Allow to cool completely on the shin. You may run cold water over it once rigid.
  12. Evaluate the fit and remold if necessary.

5. CBC PRO-SHARPENING FRAME – RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USE AND MAINTENANCE

  • Setup on a flat surface
  • Avoid over-tightening bolts so as not to strip the threads
  • Use top-stops or top locators to ensure your blades are level and square in the jig before beginning to sharpen
  • Wipe metal sharpening dust from jig after use
